New England Veterinary Ophthalmology

Drs. Alario and Montgomery have provided veterinary ophthalmology care in New Hampshire since 2014

Our Approach & Values

Our commitment to veterinary ophthalmology extends beyond our love of animals and our specialization in ophthalmology. As a privately owned, “boutique” ophthalmology practice, we are able to be creative and adaptable in treating eye problems. We consider each patient’s unique needs and will take the time to find a treatment plan that is best suited to you and your pet. We also have a strong sense of community and collaborate with your primary care veterinarian to ensure the well being of your pet.  Our ophthalmology team is small but talented, so you will see familiar faces at every appointment and will work with team members who are familiar with your pet’s needs.

Keith Montgomery

DVM, DACVO

Dr. Keith Montgomery is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and obtained his DVM from The Ohio State University in 2005. Keith then completed a one-year small animal internship at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by an ophthalmology internship at Angell Animal Medical Center in Springfield, MA. In 2010 Keith completed his residency in comparative veterinary ophthalmology at Cornell University and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 2011.

Prior to starting at New England Veterinary Ophthalmology, Keith practiced veterinary ophthalmology at Southern New Hampshire Veterinary Referral Hospital as well as Upstate Veterinary Specialties in Latham, NY. Before returning to private practice, Keith was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology for North Carolina State University and served on the editorial board for the Veterinary Ophthalmology Journal.  He has also published numerous research articles encompassing small animal and equine ophthalmology.

Keith enjoys running ultramarathons and hiking as well as other sources of cultural enrichment. He lives with his wife, son and furry friends, including a Boston Terrier, Great Dane, and a horse named Guinness.

Anthony Alario

DVM, DACVO

Dr. Anthony Alario is originally from New Jersey and completed his undergraduate degree at Rutgers University.  Anthony obtained his veterinary degree from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and remained at Tufts to complete a one year internship followed by a three year residency in comparative ophthalmology. During his eight years at Tufts University, Anthony published many peer-reviewed articles in the field of veterinary ophthalmology. He has also had the privilege of speaking on the topic of veterinary ophthalmology as an invited speaker to veterinarians around the country.

Much of Anthony’s research is in the field of non-invasive imaging techniques of the eye; however, he has a strong interest in glaucoma and diseases of the lens as well. What Anthony enjoys most about ophthalmology is the variety of species he has the
opportunity to work with and the many unique ocular adaptations each animal has developed.

Anthony lives with his better half, also a veterinarian, and their three boys. They share their home with many animal friends including three cats, two dogs, two horses, chickens, ducks, turkeys and honeybees. The whole family loves the outdoors and loves living in rural New Hampshire.

Chris Alling

DVM, DACVO

Dr. Chris Alling is a native New Englander – he grew up in Upton, Massachusetts and obtained an undergraduate degree in Animal Science from the University of Vermont in 2013. However, he also considers himself an adopted Southerner – he completed his doctoral degree at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017, and after a brief detour to the desert for a one-year rotating internship at VCA Veterinary Care Animal Hospital and Referral Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2018, he fulfilled his specialty ophthalmology training at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine where he completed a clinical ophthalmology internship in 2019 and a three-year comparative ophthalmology residency in 2022. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 2022 at the conclusion of his residency. He returned to New England to begin his career at VCA South Shore in S. Weymouth, MA before joining the team at New England Veterinary Ophthalmology in 2024. Dr. Alling’s clinical interests include corneal endothelial disease and entropion repair, but he also finds cataract surgery particularly gratifying.

Dr. Alling shares a home with his girlfriend, an exotics veterinarian. He contributed his cat to her mini-zoo (which includes another cat, one dog, two axolotls, and a crested gecko). He enjoys outdoor activities (cycling, snowboarding, hiking) and cheers on the New England Patriots and the New Orleans Saints during football season.
